About Artesanal Grill — Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Concord, CA

In short: Artesanal Grill is a family-run Mexican restaurant inside Sun Valley Mall in Concord, CA. We serve traditional recipes with fresh, in-house preparation — handmade-style tortillas where the dish calls for them, salsas blended daily, beans cooked from scratch, and proteins seasoned and grilled to order.

Our story

Artesanal Grill was opened to bring honest Mexican cooking to the Concord and Sun Valley Mall community. The food court is busy, fast, and competitive — and that is exactly where we wanted to plant a flag. Anyone can throw together a fast-casual menu. We wanted to do it the right way: real proteins, real salsas, real preparation. Every plate that goes out the window is one we would happily serve to family.

The name itself — Artesanal — is a quiet promise. It means handmade, crafted, made with care. It is the opposite of pre-portioned, pre-frozen, and pre-assembled. When we named the restaurant, we wanted a word that would hold us accountable every shift. If a plate ever stops feeling artesanal, we have stopped doing our job.

Authenticity

Our recipes pull from traditional Mexican home cooking — Michoacán-style birria, al pastor with the right amount of pineapple sweetness, carnitas slow-cooked until they pull apart with a fork. We do not cut corners on seasoning. The carne asada is marinated. The pollo is brined and seared. The pastor is shaved and griddled before it hits your tortilla. The birria gets a long braise with dried chiles, garlic, and onion until it falls apart on its own.

We talk about authenticity a lot, but we want to be specific: it is not a marketing word for us. It is a daily practice. Authenticity means starting the beans early in the morning. It means making the salsas during opening prep instead of buying them in tubs. It means chopping pico de gallo throughout the day so the tomatoes are still bright at 7 PM. It means checking the consommé on the birria and adjusting it before service. None of that is glamorous. All of it is the difference.

Variety and customization

Mexican food is a system, not a menu. The same proteins, salsas, beans, rice, and cheese can become a burrito, a bowl, a quesadilla, a torta, a taco plate, a salad, or a plate of nachos. We respect that — order the format you want, with the protein you want, and we will build it. Vegetarian builds, lighter builds, extra-protein builds — all easy.

That flexibility is also what keeps the menu approachable for first-time visitors. If you are not sure what to try, tell us what you usually like — heavier or lighter, mild or spicy, meat-forward or veggie-forward — and we will steer you to the right plate. Most of our regulars discovered their favorite that way.

Customer satisfaction

We see the same faces every week. Some of them order the same thing every time, and some try something new. Either way, we want every plate to be the reason someone says, “let’s go back to that place at Sun Valley.” That is the whole goal. If something is ever off, tell us at the counter or call us at (925) 980-1244— we will make it right.

We pay close attention to feedback. If a regular tells us the salsa was hotter than usual, we taste it. If someone says the carnitas weren’t as crispy this time, we check the prep. Small details add up. The compliment we are proudest of is also the simplest: “It tasted exactly the way it did the last time I came.”

Local Concord and East Bay context

Sun Valley Mall has been a Concord landmark for decades, and the food court is one of the most active corners of the building. Being here means we serve a real cross-section of the East Bay — shoppers, mall employees, parents on a weekend errand run, families after a movie, downtown workers grabbing lunch, and travelers passing through on I-680. Our menu has to work for all of them, and our pace has to match the rhythm of the food court.

We are proud to be part of that local ecosystem. Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Martinez, Pittsburg, Antioch, Clayton, Bay Point, Lafayette, and Pacheco are all close enough that a quick drive turns into lunch with us. We do not consider ourselves a tourist stop — we are a neighborhood kitchen that happens to be inside a mall.

Our values

  • Real ingredients. Salsas blended in-house, proteins prepped daily, no shortcut sauces.
  • Consistency. The plate you loved last visit should taste the same this visit.
  • Respect for the customer. Honest portions, honest pricing, honest answers if you ask what is in something.
  • Craft. Artesanal is in the name for a reason.

What we cook

Our menu is intentionally focused. We do not try to do every cuisine in Mexico — we cook the dishes we know how to cook well, and we cook them the right way. Burritos, burrito bowls, street tacos, taco plates, quesadillas, quesabirria, tortas, nachos, salads, sides, and traditional drinks. That is the menu. We add a special once in a while when we find an ingredient worth featuring, but the core stays consistent. People come in expecting a certain plate and we want to be there to serve it every time.

Sourcing and freshness

We buy fresh produce throughout the week so the toppings stay bright. Onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, jalapeños, limes, and avocados rotate constantly. Proteins are kept hot and replenished in small batches. We trim and prep the meat ourselves — the marinade for the al pastor is built from the dried chiles and spices, not from a bottle. Carnitas are portioned in-house. Birria is braised long and slow.

We are honest about what we are and what we are not. We are not a farm-to-table fine dining restaurant. We are a fast-paced food court kitchen that uses real ingredients, cooks them the right way, and serves them hot. That is the whole pitch.

What customers say

We are not going to repost reviews on this page — if you want to see what real customers are saying, the best place is our Google profile. The themes that come up most often are portion size, freshness, the friendliness of the counter, and the quality of the salsas. We take all of those seriously. Good or bad, feedback shapes how we run service the next day.

Sustainability and waste

Operating inside a food court means we share dish disposal and recycling infrastructure with the rest of the mall. We use food-court-standard packaging that is appropriate for hot Mexican food — foil wraps for burritos, sturdy paper boats for tacos, and sealed containers for sides. We try to portion accurately to reduce waste. Catering trays come back to us when possible to be reused.
